Pigeon Forge took its name from an 1817 iron forge built by Isaac Love along the Little Pigeon River, named for passenger pigeons that once roosted along its banks. For over a century, it remained an isolated agricultural community in the Great Smoky Mountains. The establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934 introduced steady tourist traffic along US Route 441. The opening of Rebel Railroad in 1961—which became Goldrush Junction in 1970 and was later transformed by Dolly Parton into Dollywood in 1986—permanently shifted the local economy from farming to commercial tourism.
