Sapporo

Japan's northern grid of snow, soup curry, and wide avenues.

introduction

Overview

Sapporo is Hokkaido's planned capital, laid out on an easy-to-navigate grid. Wide avenues and underground passageways keep the city moving even during heavy winter snowfall. You come here for rich miso ramen, fresh seafood, and quick access to alpine slopes. Most daily life clusters around the central axis between Sapporo Station and Susukino.

Rapid Airport Train

The JR Rapid Airport train reaches Sapporo Station in 37 minutes. Buy tickets at the airport machine before heading to the platform.

Grid Layout

Sapporo was planned in 1869 on a grid system inspired by American cities. Block numbers replace traditional Japanese street names here.

food

Soup curry, miso ramen, and grilled mutton

Sapporo food centers on hearty dishes tailored to cold northern climates. Miso ramen was created here in 1955, characterized by rich broth sealed with hot lard to retain heat. Soup curry emerged in the 1970s as a local staple, serving spicy aromatic broth over fried vegetables and chicken leg. Jingisukan fills neighborhood taverns with seasoned mutton grilled on convex iron skillets.

history

A short history

Sapporo is one of Japan's youngest major cities. Indigenous Ainu people lived along the Toyohira River for centuries before the Meiji government designated the location as Hokkaido's administrative capital in 1869. American engineers helped draft the city's grid plan, resulting in broad avenues unusual in Japan. Growth accelerated rapidly after the 1972 Winter Olympics introduced Sapporo to global winter sports culture.
