Lakes, forest edges, and Mumbai's immediate north
introduction
Thane sits directly north of Mumbai across the creek, functioning as both a suburb and an independent city of lakes. You trade central Mumbai's density for forest air near Sanjay Gandhi National Park and a quieter network of waterfronts. Traffic along Ghodbunder Road is dense during peak hours, so timing your movements matters. Local local trains connect you to South Mumbai in 45 minutes outside the morning rush.
Arrival trick
Take a prepaid cab from Mumbai Airport (BOM) off-peak. The 22-kilometre drive takes 45 minutes midday but doubles during rush hour.
Rail pioneer
India's first passenger train ran from Boribunder to Thane in 1853. Platform 1 at Thane station marks this historic terminal.
Planning trick
Avoid Ghodbunder Road between 08:30 and 11:00. Heavy freight trucks create bottlenecks until late morning.

Thane's culinary signature is Mamledar Misal. Served near the tehsildar office since 1952, this sprouted moth-bean curry comes with a layer of fiery red oil called rassa. You choose your heat level, from mild to extreme spice. Pair it with fresh pav bread to soak up the sauce.Around Masunda Lake, evening food stalls sell kanda bhaji (onion fritters) and vada pav. Coastal Agri seafood dishes like bombil fry (Bombay duck) appear on menus in traditional family restaurants around Naupada.

history
Thane served as a medieval port town known to Marco Polo as Tana. Portuguese forces captured the region in 1530 and built Ghodbunder Fort to secure maritime trade along the Ulhas estuary. The Maratha Empire seized the territory in 1737 during the Battle of Vasai. In 1853, the British Great Indian Peninsula Railway laid India's first track connecting Bombay and Thane. This single line transformed the agricultural outpost into a manufacturing center, and eventually into a residential hub for Greater Mumbai.
