Boat tickets sell out fast online
Reserve Periyar online lake safari seats via the forest portal weeks early. Walk-up seats at the jetty vanish by sunrise.

Thekkady sits inside India's main spice-growing belt, which shapes local pans. Kerala dishes here feature fresh green peppercorns, locally pressed coconut oil, and small cardamom pods picked days prior. Fishing in the Periyar reservoir is illegal due to wildlife protection laws in the tiger reserve, so fish served in local eateries is brought from coastal Kerala or external markets and usually fried with crushed garlic and red chilli paste.Dining options split between Tamil vegetarian mess halls near the border bus station and Kerala thali joints on K.K. Road. Order Kappa (tapioca) with spicy fish curry for a authentic regional midday meal.

Restaurants along Lower Camp road offer vegetarian banana-leaf thalis for around ₹120, standard for border drivers.
Cultural shows finish around 20:00. Most Kumily kitchens stop taking orders by 21:30.
history
In 1895, the British colonial administration completed the Mullaperiyar Dam to divert water to dry districts in Tamil Nadu. The project flooded low valley forests, creating the 26-square-kilometre Periyar Lake and drowning ancient trees whose trunks still emerge from the surface. The Maharaja of Travancore declared the surrounding wilderness the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary in 1934. Renamed Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950, it became a core tiger reserve in 1978 under Project Tiger. Today, eco-tourism projects employ former poachers as park guards and trackers.
Mullaperiyar Dam Built
Construction creates Periyar Lake, reshaping local hydrology and submerged forests.
Royal Sanctuary
Travancore kingdom sets aside forest land around the lake as a protected royal hunting park.
Project Tiger Entry
Periyar gains official Tiger Reserve status, tightening protection for wild Asian elephants and tigers.
Eco-Development Launch
Local cinnamon peelers and poachers transition into official park guides and eco-tourism staff.
where to stay
Choose your location based on how early you want to enter the forest reserve and how you plan to travel. Park Gate Road allows you to walk to early morning boat safaris before auto-rickshaws start running. Kumily Town puts you next to spice markets, cheap dining, and long-distance buses. Murikkady and Anakkara offer plantation homestays suited for guests with private drivers.

practicalities
The forest gate opens at 06:00 and closes to visitor traffic at 17:00 sharp. Plan return trips from the lake accordingly.
