Victoria Falls

Curated spray, wilderness edges, and high-velocity water.

introduction

Overview

Victoria Falls is a compact safari town attached to the world's largest curtain of falling water. You navigate it mostly on foot inside the national park corridor or by short taxi rides between lodge compounds. Expect mist that saturates your gear, wild warthogs on hotel lawns, and straightforward logistics paid in US dollars.

Border crossing trick

Get a KAZA Univisa for $50 on arrival at VFA airport. It covers unlimited travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days.

UNESCO distinction

The falls span 1,708 metres in width and drop into Batoka Gorge. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1989 for its sheer hydraulic power.

Rainforest entry timing

Enter Victoria Falls National Park at 06:00 opening. Morning light illuminates the main spray without the mid-day tour group crowds.

food

Zambezi bream, sadza, and game meats

Dining in Victoria Falls divides along economic lines. High-end safari lodges serve three-course game dinners targeting international palates. Town centre spots dish up grilled Zambezi bream alongside sadza, the dense white cornmeal staple that anchors every local meal. For authentic regional cooking, head to Chinotimba township. Local eateries prepare sadza with mubora une dovi or ibhobola (pumpkin leaves in peanut sauce) or braised beef shin. You eat with your right hand, rolling sadza into a ball to dip into greens and gravy.

  • Eat bream whole

Zambezi bream comes whole with bone and skin intact. Flake the white meat directly off the spine with your fork or fingers.

  • Township lunch hours

Chinotimba food stalls open for lunch at 12:00. Arrive before 13:30 when popular pots of beef bones and sadza run out.

  • US Dollar dominance

Restaurants list prices in USD and expect cash for small bills. Carry clean $1, $5, and $10 notes; torn bills get rejected.

history

A short history

Tonga people inhabited the Zambezi valley for centuries, naming the waterfall Mosi-oa-Tunya ('The Smoke That Thunders'). Scottish missionary David Livingstone reached the site in November 1855, naming it after Queen Victoria and opening the region to British commercial interest. The town grew rapid infrastructure after Cecil Rhodes planned the Cape-to-Cairo railway across the canyon. The opening of the Victoria Falls Bridge in 1905 established the settlement as southern Africa's premier transit stop and river resort.
