Yerevan is older than Rome, founded as the fortress city of Erebuni in 782 BC. It remained a modest provincial town under Persian and Russian rule until 1924, when neoclassical architect Alexander Tamanyan redesigned the city into a circular garden capital built from local pink tufa rock.

Choose your base by how much you intend to walk. Kentron keeps every major attraction within a 20-minute walk, but comes at a price premium. Peripheral areas like Arabkir or Shengavit save money if you are comfortable using taxis or the underground metro line.

Yerevan's center is exceptionally compact and best explored on foot. For longer trips, ride-hailing applications are extremely cheap, while the single-line Soviet metro system provides quick north-south transit for flat fares.
