We booked a stay from 21 to 27 August at a property that, on paper, seemed perfect for exploring Miyakojima: a beautiful, green setting, a lovely private beach with few crowds, and spacious rooms with private pools. Unfortunately, behind that gorgeous façade was probably the worst hotel experience we’ve ever had. On 22 August, just 24 hours after our arrival, we were told the hotel would close three days later and evacuate all guests due to weather risks. The solution? Find another place ourselves. No concrete help or alternatives were offered. Even though we were asked to leave the hotel three days earlier than expected, no director or manager ever appeared. We had to discuss the situation with reception staff, who never personally explained options or helped us find a solution. From a five‑star hotel, in such an exceptional situation, I would have expected more. We decided to leave the island early, bought new plane tickets and booked another hotel in Tokyo. We were told the unused nights would be refunded. Meanwhile we were advised not to go out because of the weather. The restaurant was full, so we ordered room service. The next day the sun returned and we asked to cancel a dinner that had been booked only because the previous day it was not advisable to go out. We were told we would have to pay a penalty equal to the full cost of the dinner because we didn’t give 24 hours’ notice. We also asked if it would be possible to check out after 11, considering that, precisely because of the early closure, we had to buy a new afternoon flight. We were told that, for a supplement, we could keep the room for another two hours.
