I’d say the place is awful—management really needs to step up. The spot is great if you’re heading to Danum Valley, just a 5‑minute walk to the offices. Towels and the bathroom were fine, and the AC worked, but I suspect it hasn’t been serviced because of the lack of investment. Walking into the bathroom, I found a cockroach, which I killed and flushed. The room felt dirty and didn’t smell clean; the sheets were rumpled and stained, and there were plenty of ants even though we didn’t leave food out. The single employee swapped the stained sheet, and the next morning the room had fresh, different sheets, yet dirt remained in the corners and there were cobwebs on the ceiling. New sheets, a better laundry protocol, and more staff are needed to make this a decent budget hotel. Clean sheets, towels, and a clean floor are basic expectations. The window didn’t shut, letting a gecko slip in and chirp loudly in the middle of the night, so I had to open the window fully to get it out. In contrast, my room in Danum Valley, surrounded by forest, had no cockroaches, ants, or geckos and came with clean sheets. There’s no lift, so you have to carry bags up two flights.
