“Excruciatingly noisy and unfriendly.”
The place was very clean, had filtered water and a free yoga room, and its central location was convenient. However, construction under my window produced the relentless sound of an angle grinder every day for seven days a week, and I would have had to pay for two weeks if I left. The staff did not offer me a quieter room or even a smile or greeting from the two office men for the entire 14 days, which is not just rude but part of their job to welcome guests. As it was my first time in Rishikesh, I didn’t realize that 90 % of accommodations are called an ‘ashram’ and that yoga teaching is just a business like a supermarket. When I asked to join a class I received no response, and I might have enjoyed my stay more if I had participated in those activities. No alternative communication method was offered. In hindsight, I would have just paid them and left. The students doing a course there were extremely noisy late into the evening, and my first‑floor room was disturbed by the sound. When booking, it should have been explained that construction was happening across the narrow road, not that I was locked in. The ‘ashram’ felt unwelcoming and ruined my enjoyment of Rishikesh.
