“They agreed to cancel and refund—then reversed their position after we left”

We only stayed one night out of the four we had booked. During a freak heatwave, the houseboat was still 28 °C at about 11:20 p.m., and the owner, who was below us, said it was 29 °C. She admitted the extreme weather and warned that finding an air‑co‑equipped hotel in Amsterdam could be hard. A few small windows wouldn’t open, and opening the others let mosquitoes, spiders and other insects in. The owner’s son tried to help by lending us his portable air‑conditioner, which I appreciated, but it was very noisy and needed an exhaust vent that made the insect problem worse. It helped us get through that one night, but it wasn’t a reasonable fix for the remaining three nights. The heatwave was nobody’s fault, yet the cancellation was mishandled. At 00:24 the property management sent a message: “Since the host is open to canceling and refunding your booking, please send us a request and we’ll confirm it.” I trusted that, submitted the request, and spent until about 2 a.m. finding emergency lodging for my three children and me, paid for another hotel, and left the next morning. I told the new place at 11:24. At 15:26—after we had left and already paid for a different hotel—the management reversed its stance and denied the cancellation. They later cited the lack of advertised air‑conditioning, the closed windows, and the portable unit. The windows were closed to keep insects out, and the unit was only a noisy temporary solution. We were charged for all four nights even though we stayed only one. It is unacceptable to promise a cancellation and refund, let guests rely on that promise and incur big costs, and then backtrack once they have left.

A real adventure—there’s even a chance to swim off the boat. Fantastic way to see Amsterdam.

“Hidden gem with lovely owners a stones throw away from the city centre”

Ideal location - 15min bike ride to central station but far enough away to really relax and enjoy the scenery. Owners are absolutely lovely, friendly and welcoming and encouraged us to swim from the boat which was brilliant in the heatwave! Comfy beds, fully equipped kitchen, would 100% recommend and would definitely stay here again. Nothing!
