We spent one night on our NC500 journey, the second‑to‑last stop, and it turned out to be the best of the lot. The hosts greeted us warmly and the little touches in the room really lifted the experience, especially after a long day of driving. The bathroom was superb, breakfast fantastic, and the views from the lounge and dining room were gorgeous; the whole property was spotless and felt cosy and warm. The only tweak we’d suggest is adding a bit more lighting by the mirror in the room so two people can get ready at the same time, with one using the bathroom mirror.

Staying at Ardvreck House in Ullapool was an amazing experience; it was by far our favourite of all the places we visited in Scotland. The intimate, elegant 10‑room B&B is run by Neil and Aidan, and their attention to detail shows everywhere. Our rooms were beautifully decorated with sweeping, head‑on views across Loch Broom that were simply breathtaking. Thoughtful touches included chocolates beside the tea and coffee, and modern bathrooms with terrific showers and plenty of hot water, which was especially welcome after long hikes. Breakfast rivaled that of many major hotels, offering a huge selection of fresh fruit, berries, cereals, yogurt, hot dishes, and local specialties like Ullapool smoked salmon, all served in a dining room overlooking the loch, making it hard to choose between the food and the view. The guest lounge had equally spectacular views and a well‑stocked honesty bar where you could grab wine, a small bottle of Prosecco, or a wee dram and simply note what you took; binoculars were available for watching wildlife on the loch, and some guests have seen dolphins from here, though none appeared for us. What we appreciated most, especially after staying in larger hotels, was how personal everything felt. We arrived late on our first night and found our room keys waiting with handmade tags—such a small gesture that captured the warmth of the place perfectly. And the views? Ardvreck House sits on a hillside above Loch Broom, just a few minutes outside Ullapool, offering cinematic, sweeping vistas that literally stop you in your tracks. We were thrilled to have stayed there.
