“Hidden Gem with some possible challenges”
Barefoot is truly an in‑nature experience, with birdsong waking you and nature all around. We arrived later than expected, so we missed the elephant experience. Dinner and breakfast were pretty good, and the staff were very pleasant and friendly. Barefoot sent Kim to fetch us with a 4×4 from a nearby mountain lodge because of difficult road conditions, and that was very nice of them. If you own a 4×4 and enjoy exciting roads, this place is an absolute gem. The location is challenging to reach (especially in rain) if you don’t have a 4×4. While I loved the mountain road and the thrill of almost getting stuck in mud with a Toyota Starlet Cross, it meant we didn’t use the original route we planned, arriving much later and missing time we’d like to spend at the nice nature accommodation. The route challenge should be communicated at booking so guests can plan ahead. My biggest issue was the power outage shortly after we arrived. It was an Eskom problem, but it meant no warm water, so the deck bath—my main draw—was unusable. This was a disappointment, because the glamping experience is lost when the tent/cabin is dark. At the price I expected, some generators should keep things running until at least 12 pm. I still enjoyed the experience, but it felt like an overpay without power.
