If you want to relax, this place is amazing. We had a great time; Margaret is a lovely host, her food is really good, and the place feels like home with a cozy bed and little details in the elephant villa. I’m looking forward to staying again.

Emel’s Retreat is the perfect escape from the world’s chaos. My wife and I spent a deeply relaxing night here, made even more special by Margaret’s incredible warmth and hospitality—she truly treated us like family. We loved everything about this peaceful place and are already counting down the days until we return. Every detail was perfect.

“Staying at Emel's is like visiting your loving aunt”

The host Margaret and staff were sublime, going above and beyond to provide anything we needed. They rushed to handle every trouble, like a small cut on a child’s foot, and catered to our breakfast preferences while also considering our children’s wishes for dinner. The ice cream was always a highlight! The living spaces are very beautiful with many personal touches from Margaret. Everyone enjoyed the pool (about 1.2 m deep) and the lovely resting area around it. The Wi‑Fi was excellent and the hot water pressure was fine. The only issue was the AC in one room, which was quickly fixed, and a few encounters with cockroaches.

“Emels retreat is your home away for home and an amazing base to explore Galle and south Sri Lanka”

The villa at Emel's retreat felt like a perfect home away from home for my extended family during a 10‑day trip to Sri Lanka. The attention to detail in the villa’s design is impressive, and its location is ideal: a 10‑minute Tuk‑Tuk ride to the beach‑side café on pristine Bara beach, a 20‑minute ride to Galle downtown for shopping, and a 30‑minute ride to excellent surfing schools. When we wanted peace, the retreat’s calm atmosphere let us relax by the amazing pool. The real gem is the owner, Margaret, who pays close attention to detail and helps with itineraries—tuk‑tuks, surf schools, Bara beach cafés, and must‑see spots in Galle—making the stay unforgettable. Margaret is also an amazing cook; breakfast featured Scottish porridges, poached eggs, and hoppers, while dinners included scrumptious Italian pasta, fresh fish from local markets, and chocolate desserts, all highlights of our visit. A big thanks to the house help—Tushari, John, and Shamini—who were always available to assist. Nothing negative; the five days slipped by in a breeze, allowing us to relax and enjoy a slow pace compared to other holidays where we were constantly on the move. Keep in mind you’ll need your own vehicle (car, scooter) or a tuk‑tuk to reach Bara beach (3‑4 km), Galle, and other surf spots. If you’re after a quiet spot amid a busy beach‑side area, this is the place.

“Very nice accommodation! The pool is perfect for relaxing.”

The pool is very nice, and Margaret is very friendly and nice. The only downside is that there is no AC.
