“A really great find, but a little attention needed”
This cabin is undeniably wonderful in a truly unique setting; we watched two extraordinary sunsets over the lake and relaxed in the hot tub after long hikes. The remote yet accessible location made it a brilliant base for exploring Iceland’s main sights. We cooked dinner there both nights to fully enjoy the scenery. However, a few details should be noted before booking: new properties along the track mean it isn’t as remote as Google Maps or the listing suggested, and neighboring properties are hidden from view when inside, so we couldn’t see them from the outdoor tub. Flies were an issue around the tub area, more than the usual midges. The cabin, though built to luxury standards, showed some lack of maintenance—dust on textured surfaces above the shower and dirt in gaps and corners. The “blackout blinds” only cover the lower square sections of the windows, leaving the upper parts partially transparent; during summer the windows never darkened fully, so I used an eye mask. The windows face the road, and while traffic is not heavy, cars pass regularly, allowing people to see directly into the bedroom, shower, and bath, which forces a choice between privacy and the view. We expected some mirrored finish or privacy film, so this was disappointing. Overall, it didn’t feel as luxurious as hoped, but it remains a fantastic space in an extraordinary location, and we would likely stay again and recommend it with a bit more attention to cleaning, maintenance, and privacy.
