Podi Hoona Yala Safari Camp

“It’s a truly enchanting place.”

This little camp hidden within the jungle was delightful. The staff were very helpful and even showed us an Indian pitta around the camp in the morning. The food was delicious. Our family of five were the only people staying at the camp which made it very special. It was a bit of a way from the Yala park entrance, maybe 20 minutes, but the journey by jeep was quite exciting!

“A perfect night, with fantasic hosts who know the wildlife so well and who has real passion for it.”

The experience was flawless, thanks to the staff who genuinely wanted to help us and show us the wildlife. We were taken on a guided walk to spot birds at dusk, and when one of our group mentioned wanting to see snakes, Bandu—who studied wildlife management in the UK—arrived during dinner and showed us two snakes he’d found. He also drove us at night to see Night Jars, and even spotted a snake from a truck using only a phone light. Bandu arranged a safari to Yala, where he somehow bypassed most of the truck queues, and we saw a leopard, many elephants, a sloth bear, and so much more. The rooms were comfortable and clean, with an outdoor shower that’s basic but appropriate for being in the middle of nowhere; bring torches and power packs. I’d come back right away and recommend it to anyone, even our two 80‑year‑old friends who were fit and loved it. Thank you, Bandu, for your passion and knowledge—it’s huge and infectious. The owner was incredibly friendly, walking around the bungalows with me and clearly eager to point out any wildlife or plants he could.

The staff were great, and the nighttime and morning sounds were incredible! Getting a driver for a safari was a highlight. The only downside was that we didn’t realize how remote the location was; if you need something you’ll likely have to wait. Bring a battery backup for your phone because there’s no electricity outlet for charging.

We really enjoyed the host’s welcome, the time he spent with us, the farm walks, and the dinner. The place is beautiful and feels like a perfect immersion before a safari. It’s an experience into the wild, so don’t be afraid of the little critters—they’re part of its charm! I would have preferred a better-equipped indoor shower because it’s hard to find in the dark and the shower curtain blew away with the wind. Also, having access to another powerbank for our electronics would have helped.
