The jungle setting was amazing, with a river right at the back of the property. The only downside was the driveway – it’s rough and could use a resurfacing, but a small 2‑wheel drive can still get in.

Talari is tucked away from the road, so you only hear nature, not traffic. The lodge has almost 2 km of trails where we spotted a bunch of birds, and the room even has a little fridge. Breakfast was solid – fruit, orange juice, toast and eggs, and we could order a second egg without a fuss. The double bed’s mattress was a bit hollow, so I slept in the single instead, and there was no Wi‑Fi in that unit.

The place is a great bird sanctuary right on the river, but you can’t get Wi‑Fi in the room – only in the restaurant and reception. The staff were friendly.

The spot is perfect for birdwatchers, the room was clean, and the food was excellent.

The owner was friendly and helpful, the location was great, and the room was spacious with good Wi‑Fi and plenty of outlets. The downside was that there was no dinner service – the restaurant was closed – and the coffee was weak for Costa Rica. Of the eight places we stayed, this had the worst breakfast, and both the room and pool looked a bit worn.
