Hotel Spa La Central, an adults-only retreat, occupies a restored 19th-century building between two rivers, adjacent to Boadella Reservoir. The building is unique, the rooms are comfortable, and everything is in an unrivaled natural setting. The staff are friendly and treat you like family. The spa isn’t worth it unless you’re a big monkey; it’s just a small pool with super chlorinated water that can get annoying, a few pressure jets, and a tiny bubble zone.

The river is great. The spa pool water was cold, and the restaurant price was a bit more affordable.

The place is a modernist house by the river (note: it’s isolated, 20 minutes by car on a dirt track from Darnius). We got the ROOM. On entering, it smelled like sewage mixed with air freshener. We asked for a room change and were told it wasn’t possible. The girl took the air freshener and told us to ventilate the room… (no words…) We slept all night with the nauseating smell in the air and on the bedding. With the windows open (it was cold) and towels in the drains, it was a horror. In the morning we tried to shower, but the shower column was broken and only the side mist sprays worked (you can imagine the awkward positions to wash your head…). When we got home we had to ventilate the suitcase and wash our clothes because we carried the smell with us… The breakfast was correct but very disorganized. We had to complain three times for latte coffees, and the milk for cereal never arrived. As we told reception: €200/night for a nauseating room and a broken shower feels excessive. Maybe that room shouldn’t be open to the public until it’s fixed.

The place was beautiful, right next to the stream that flows into the Boadella reservoir, and the hotel itself was comfortable; the terrace overlooks the stony stream. The dining table was lovely, but it was a pity that breakfast only started at 8:30 am.
