The staff were courteous and welcoming, delivering excellent service during a recent two‑night stay. The room was comfortable and clean, and the location in Durham was great. The only downside was the lack of lunch or evening food unless booked in advance, though there are plenty of eating options in Durham.

40 Winks sits brilliantly for anyone visiting Durham, just a short walk from the centre and the Cathedral. We were there for my son’s graduation and, despite booking late and getting the last room, it offered great value for that evening. Our smaller Woodland room was lovely, well‑appointed, with thoughtful details like Molton Brown bathroom goodies, nice towels, and well‑placed plugs. The bathroom was small but ideal, and the shower was excellent. I couldn’t fault it. The larger rooms and suites look lovely, though I didn’t see them myself. My cousins had booked the same hotel that night, and George was absolutely brilliant, opening the bar for us. He is delightful and extremely helpful. My cousin mentioned she stays there regularly when visiting her son at the university and always chooses it over other Durham hotels. We didn’t have breakfast, but my husband and cousins said it was superb. Although there isn’t official parking, we easily found street parking nearby, paid via a parking app, and could extend the time as needed. The only thing I could think of improving is a car park, but given the location it would be impossible and parking was easy despite the busy week and central spot. Overall, this place is great.

This accommodation exceeded all expectations in every aspect. George and his staff were exceptional and went above and beyond ! Beautifully decorated throughout and very welcoming. Breakfast was lovely and had a great selection to choose from. I couldn't fault this hotel whatsoever and will definitely be booking again when we return to Durham !
