Old Downton Lodge

The room and surroundings were fantastic. Walking across the courtyard garden to the bar and dining room was a short stroll, and it was lovely for a pre‑dinner drink on a sunny evening. The food—both dinner and breakfast—was superb, and I’d strongly recommend dining at the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. The only issue was that the hotel sits at the end of a long, unlit driveway, so you might not want to drive back out again for dinner unless you’re okay with returning in the dark.

“Beautiful and relaxing! A gem.”

The setting was beautiful, and the ambience and dinner were exquisite. I especially enjoyed the freshly baked gluten‑free rolls and the kind staff at breakfast. With Wi‑Fi and desks in the rooms, I could work, and the location made it easy to mix leisure time between meetings. I rented two rooms, each beautiful in its own way: tastefully decorated and in line with the converted‑paddocks, country manor theme. The only drawback was that Uber couldn’t locate it easily, so we had to call the hotel for directions—nothing the hotel could do, but it’s off the usual Uber route.

“Short break somewhere different”

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and EV charging was free. A personalized note at breakfast was a nice touch. The buffet was limited but lovely, and the breakfast area felt a bit like a mortuary with evening lounge music playing—pretty depressing. Reception should be front and centre rather than beyond the sitting area, and the initial welcome wasn’t very warm or friendly. We didn’t realize this was a restaurant with rooms on the first floor, not a hotel.

“Comfortable and welcoming”

It was comfortable and welcoming, a lovely place to stay in a beautiful location. The staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful, especially Christina!
