“Welcoming, Rustic, Affordable”
The Inga & Children ‘Family Welcome’, close to Kaikoura Township and all amenities, the unapologetic nature of the property, the view of the snow‑clad ranges beyond my room’s north‑facing Ranchslider, and an immediately adjacent early‑morning opening café for breakfast before driving to Picton for a 2:00 pm Bluebridge ferry to Wellington. The Lazy Shag Lodge listing is honest, “It Is What It Is”; perhaps not for everyone, but it certainly was for me ~ I wouldn’t hesitate to go again.

The motel is easy to find, close to a supermarket and a whale‑watching spot. It has a front and a back yard, each with several rooms. The room is large enough for four to six people. A big kitchen is available any time. The boss has lovely kids, and they’re all friendly! The kitchen gets too cold in winter.
“Peaceful; handy to services; now my go-to in Kaikoura”
The price was great, I had a large room all to myself, and there was plenty of space for my bike in the room or on the deck outside; I liked hearing the trains. The room was sunny with a view, but the yard looked a bit untidy even though the guest areas were fine. Getting my heavy e‑bike up the steps to the deck was tricky, and the steps from the deck to the kitchen felt awkward with poor lighting.
