The breakfast was fantastic, and the girl who checked us in was friendly. The bar felt a bit grubby, and there was hair around the toilet and shower in the bathroom.

Breakfast was decent, but the coffee was practically undrinkable. The bar staff were poorly trained, slow, and confused. Reception was badly organized, with large suite seats at a low desk that made checking in or out awkward. The stairwell was filthy, the room carpet was stained, a wardrobe knob was missing, and the room stayed hot even though the radiators were off – no idea why.

I’ve stayed here on and off for 37 years, and it’s become bland and anonymous except for the staff; it lost its charm and local feel, only historic pictures on the walls remain. It feels like any other hotel in the British Isles, with fake menu descriptions for wholesale items, much of it pinged, and, like everything in Ireland today, pricey. The décor is a sterile chain‑hotel style, breakfast is okay, and the restaurant opens at convenient times, so it’s better than most in Youghal, though not worth the money. It works for events, but the wear and tear shows and it needs a rethink. Most staff are friendly and accommodating, but the younger ones need more training. The front rooms have windows that let in road and customer noise when open, and some are small and tired. The biggest problems are sticky carpets and stained, worn furniture that really bring the place down.

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay; everything was perfect. The staff were all lovely, the food was great, we had a beautiful room, and the location was nice too.
