I had a very nice stay at Batus Safari Lodge; Batu and his family were very friendly and helpful, I also enjoyed a tasty rice and curry there, and the lodge is set in a quiet setting with a nice garden.

The place was spotless and cozy, offering great value, and the meals were tasty. We joined the safari with Batu, which turned out to be the highlight of our month‑long Sri Lanka adventure. Batu greeted us warmly, was very friendly, and shared a lot of knowledge about the wildlife. The lodge is just a 4‑minute drive from the elephant transit home, which is also worth a visit!

The family ran the lodge with a welcoming spirit while respecting our privacy. The garden stretches across the entire property. They charge a fair price for the safari, but since we chose not to go because the entrance fee was too steep, they didn’t push us again. The food was generous and tasty, and they let us choose the serving times. Being low season, we booked a double room but were upgraded to a family room, which had a fan and air‑conditioning; we used the fan normally, but the AC made a noticeable difference when it got hot. The neighborhood is very quiet. We walked around the Udawalawe Reservoir and met friendly locals. When we told them we were heading to Pelmadulla by bus, they offered to drive us to the junction in their safari jeep for free, so even though we skipped the safari we still enjoyed the ride. Thanks to Batu and the family for a wonderful experience 🥰

The food was excellent. Breakfast featured fresh local dishes like roti, lentils, and fish curry, while dinner included hoppers, sodi, and an egg omelette. The beds were comfortable and the staff were very friendly. If you want a local experience in Udawalawe, I strongly recommend Batu's Safari Lodge.

Batu welcomed us warmly, and the dinner prepared by the house lady was an outstanding curry with rice—authentic and among the best we had on our Sri Lanka trip. After a night that felt like a jungle (you could hear animals and forest sounds around you :) ), we set off at 5:30 for the safari. Batu was an excellent driver and guide, taking different routes than the other vehicles and giving us amazing moments alone with elephants. It was wonderful :)
