Alor Setar

Royal Kedah heritage set amid endless paddy fields.

introduction

Overview

Alor Setar is the royal capital of Kedah, defined by paddy fields that stretch right to its urban edges. You navigate a compact centre anchored by 20th-century civic monuments, grand mosques, and open squares. Life moves deliberately slow compared to Penang or Kuala Lumpur. It works best as an overnight study of northern Malay culture before heading to Langkawi or Thailand.

Airport connection

Sultan Abdul Halim Airport sits 12km north of the centre. A Grab ride costs around RM15 to RM20 and takes 15 minutes.

Kedah weekend schedule

Kedah observes its official weekend on Friday and Saturday. Government offices and state museums close on Friday, reopening Sunday.

Langkawi ferry access

Kuala Kedah jetty lies 12km west of town. Passenger ferries run daily to Langkawi for RM26.50 one way.

food

Rice culture and Kedah spice

Kedah is Malaysia's rice bowl, and Alor Setar eats accordingly. Rice dishes and thick rice noodles dominate breakfast and lunch menus. Chefs season dishes with black pepper, wild herbs, and fresh fish caught in nearby rivers and coastal waters.

history

A short history

Alor Setar was founded in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II as the eighth administrative seat of the Kedah Sultanate. River geography made it a natural trade node, but also exposed it to repeated invasions from Siam throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. British administration arrived under the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty, leaving brick administrative offices beside traditional royal structures.
