A short history
Amarillo grew out of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad construction in 1887. Originally named Berry, it was renamed Amarillo (Spanish for yellow) after the yellow clay along nearby creek banks. Cattle ranching quickly established the city as a major shipping hub.
