Brasilia

Oscar Niemeyer's modernist capital built in the shape of an airplane.

introduction

Overview

Lucio Costa designed Brasilia in 1957 in the shape of a massive airplane. High-rise apartment blocks group into self-contained residential superquadras along the wings. Oscar Niemeyer designed the white concrete monuments down the central Eixo Monumental. You need cars or rideshares to move efficiently across these vast planned distances.

Airport proximity

Brasília Airport sits 13 kilometers south of the central hotel sectors. Rideshare cars reach downtown in under twenty minutes.

UNESCO World Heritage site

UNESCO designated the entire Plano Piloto a World Heritage site in 1987. It remains the largest 20th-century urban project on the list.

Navigating sector codes

Addresses rely on spatial coordinates like SHS or SQN rather than traditional street names. Learn the grid system before booking transfers.

food

Cerrado flavours and administrative lunches

Brasília gathered workers from across Brazil during its construction, creating a cuisine heavy with northeastern and central regional influences. Native cerrado ingredients like pequi fruit and baru nuts feature heavily in central dishes alongside classic regional stews. Fast executive lunch plates dominate central commercial sectors during government working hours.

  • Vila Planalto dining

Construction workers built Vila Planalto in 1957. Today its rustic family restaurants serve home-style galinhada and grilled meats right behind the presidential palace.

  • Cerrado ingredients

Look for regional fruits like pequi, buriti, and baru nuts at the weekend craft markets beneath the TV Tower.

  • Weekday lunch rush

Government ministries empty between 12:30 and 14:00. Arrive early at commercial sector restaurants to secure a table.

history

A short history

President Juscelino Kubitschek commissioned Brasília in 1956 to shift Brazil's political core away from Rio de Janeiro into the interior highlands. Architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lúcio Costa designed and completed the planned capital in under four years, opening it in April 1960.

transport

Getting around

Brasília was designed around modern automobile speeds, resulting in long distances between sectors and minimal pedestrian crosswalks across major avenues. The subway system links central bus hubs to southern zones, while rideshare cars handle most sightseer travel across the central axis.

从Brasília International Airport (BSB)出发

  • Rideshare20 minR$25–40

Board at designated pickup lanes outside the arrivals lower curb.

  • Taxi20 minR$50–70

Official taxis line up outside arrivals 24 hours daily.

  • The Metrô DF runs along Asa Sul down to satellite cities, but skips Asa Norte entirely.

  • Cloverleaf intersections called tesourinhas eliminate traffic lights along residential wings; drivers yield before entering.

  • Drivers actually stop for pedestrians at marked crosswalks inside residential superquadras, unlike in Rio or São Paulo.

  • Traffic crawls along the central Eixo Rodoviário during morning (07:30–09:00) and evening (17:30–19:00) commutes.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Low humidity safety

Winter relative humidity frequently dips below 15 percent. Carry water bottles and moisturizer everywhere.

  • Weekend quiet

The political core empties completely on weekends. Commercial blocks inside residential wings remain active.

  • Dress code rules

The National Congress and Supreme Court require long pants and closed-toe shoes for interior tours.

  • Card payments ubiquitous

Nearly all vendors, food trucks, and taxis accept contactless credit cards and Pix.

  • Lake Paranoá recreation

Rent paddleboards or book boat tours at Pontão do Lago Sul for evening lakefront sunset views.
