Overview
Cinque Terre consists of five fishing villages hooked into steep Ligurian cliffs. You travel between them using local train tunnels, cliff paths, or passenger boats. Expect crowded rail platforms and steep stone steps in exchange for dramatic coastal views.
Arrival by train
Take the Cinque Terre Express from La Spezia. Driving inside the five villages is practically impossible due to pedestrian zones and zero parking.
UNESCO World Heritage site
The five villages and surrounding terraced slopes earned UNESCO protection in 1997 as a cultural landscape shaped by centuries of steep vineyard farming.
Hiking permit rule
The coastal Sentiero Azzurro trails between Monterosso, Vernazza, and Corniglia require a daily Cinque Terre Card. Higher inland trails remain free to walk.

Ligurian cuisine centers on steep-slope agriculture and local catches. Basil harvested near Genoa fuels the pesto, served over twisty trofie pasta. Anchovies from Monterosso are salted in wooden barrels or fried whole.

- Last Train Timings
Late night train gaps reach 90 minutes after midnight. Missing the last train leaves taxi options scarce and expensive.

Public fountains stand in every village square. Water is clean, free, and drinkable.
