El Calafate

Glacier access and Patagonian winds on Lago Argentino.

introduction

Overview

El Calafate functions as the logistical base for the southern ice field of Los Glaciares National Park. You move through a single commercial corridor on Avenida del Libertador where outfitters, bakeries, and gear shops sit end to end. Expect high winds off Lago Argentino and premium pricing on almost every service. Outside of glacier excursions, town life moves slowly.

Airport transit options

Comandante Armando Airport sits 21 km east. Official shared minibuses run directly to hotel doors for less than half the cost of a private taxi.

UNESCO World Heritage site

Los Glaciares National Park gained UNESCO status in 1981. It protects one of the world's largest continental ice masses outside Greenland and Antarctica.

Park entry and boat permits

Buy your national park entry ticket online before arriving at the gate. Boat excursions to Perito Moreno and Upsala require separate tickets booked days ahead.

food

Patagonian lamb and calafate berries

Dining in El Calafate centers on slow-roasted lamb (cordero patagónico) cooked whole over open-pit charcoal fires called asadores. Restaurants along Avenida del Libertador specialize in this dish, carved directly onto metal plates. Local desserts and spirits rely heavily on the dark calafate berry, which grows wild in the surrounding scrubland.

history

A short history

El Calafate originated as a sheltered trading stop for wool transports moving across the Patagonian steppe. The settlement takes its name from the spiny calafate shrub that grows along the Calafate stream. The creation of Los Glaciares National Park turned an isolated sheep-farming village into Argentina's primary base for glacial tourism.

  1. 1927

    Official Founding

The Argentine government officially establishes the village of El Calafate to supply rural sheep estancias across southern Santa Cruz.

  2. 1937

    National Park Creation

Los Glaciares National Park is formed, protecting 724,000 hectares of ice fields, subpolar forests, and Patagonian lakes.

  3. 1981

    UNESCO Inscription

UNESCO designates Los Glaciares National Park a World Heritage site, focusing global attention on the advancing Perito Moreno Glacier.

  4. 2000

    International Airport Opens

Comandante Armando Tola International Airport opens, allowing direct commercial flights from Buenos Aires and replacing long overland road journeys.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Patagonian Wind Protection

Wind gusts frequently reach 80 km/h during summer. Bring windproof outerwear and secure drop-susceptible items like hats and lens caps.

  • Cash vs Cards

Major hotels and tour agencies accept credit cards, but smaller cafes and craft markets insist on cash. Keep paper currency on hand.

  • Sun Exposure

UV radiation reflected off ice fields and lake water causes rapid sunburn even on overcast days. Apply high-SPF sunscreen daily.

  • Ice Trekking Age Limits

Mini-trekking and Big Ice tours on Perito Moreno enforce strict age limits (typically 8–65 for Mini, 18–50 for Big Ice). Verify before booking.
