Guilin

Guilin is a compact city built around dramatic limestone peaks and winding rivers. You navigate it by walking along river loops or taking short rides between urban karst hills. The rhythm moves fast in the core, but slows down along the water. Expect damp air, sharp landscape contrasts, and quick local meals.

Guilin rice noodles (mifen) define daily eating in this city. Local shops make soft rice noodles served with slow-cooked gravy, crispy beef or pork, fried peanuts, and pickled long beans. Diners mix everything thoroughly before eating, only topping off the bowl with hot broth from a self-serve urn at the end. River fish cooked with local beer and sour chili sauce offers a heavier evening meal along the banks.

Guilin grew as a strategic military outpost during the Qin Dynasty after the construction of the Lingqu Canal. The waterway connected northern China to southern river networks. Under the Ming Dynasty, local feudatories constructed royal palaces at the foot of Solitary Beauty Peak. Modern Guilin emerged as one of China's earliest international tourism hubs in the 1970s.

Guilin has no subway network. You rely on buses, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and e-bikes. Taxis run on meters across the main city. DiDi ride-hailing works efficiently throughout all urban districts. Cruising river boats handle transport down river toward Yangshuo from designated southern piers.
