A short history
Jakarta began as Sunda Kelapa, a busy port town serving the Hindu Sunda Kingdom. In 1527, Fatahillah captured the city and renamed it Jayakarta. The Dutch East India Company destroyed Jayakarta in 1619, erecting the fortified colonial capital of Batavia in its place. The city reassumed the name Jakarta during World War II before becoming Indonesia's national capital in 1945.
