Overview
Kota Kinabalu sits on the northwest coast of Borneo between the South China Sea and the Crocker Range. Compact and grid-lined, the city centre is easily traversed on foot or via short Grab rides. Daily life centres around the waterfront, morning kopitiam stalls, and island ferry terminals. Expect direct access to coral reefs within twenty minutes of the harbour.

Grab cars pick up outside BKI Terminal 1 arrivals. A ride to Gaya Street costs around MYR 10 to MYR 15 and takes 15 minutes.

history
A short history
Founded as Jesselton in 1899 by the British North Borneo Company, the settlement replaced an earlier trade post destroyed by fire. WWII reduced nearly all timber structures to ash. Renamed Kota Kinabalu in 1967, the city expanded rapidly as Sabah's state capital.

The British North Borneo Company builds a rail terminal and port at Jesselton, naming it after Vice-Chairman Sir Charles Jessel.

Wartime Destruction
Allied bombing destroys almost every wooden building in Jesselton to clear Japanese forces before liberation.

Statehood
North Borneo gains independence from Britain and joins the Federation of Malaysia under the name Sabah.

Renamed Kota Kinabalu
Jesselton is officially renamed Kota Kinabalu, referencing Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia's prominent granite peak.
