introduction
Nelspruit is the administrative nerve center of Mpumalanga province. High hills and citrus orchards frame a functional commercial city that sits at the base of the Drakensberg escarpment. Most travelers treat it as a refueling stop for Kruger National Park, but its subtropical gardens and ancient cave systems merit a full day. You need a car here; public transport does not serve visitors well.
Arrival trick
Fly into Kruger Mpumalanga Airport (MQP) to avoid the four-hour drive from Johannesburg. Pick up your rental car directly at the terminal.
Geological significance
The nearby Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains hold UNESCO status. They contain some of the oldest preserved volcanic rocks on Earth.
Navigation advice
Rent a car with high ground clearance. Escarpment side roads suffer from frequent pothole damage after heavy rain.

Nelspruit sits in the heart of South Africa's subtropical fruit farming region. Macadamia orchards, avocado groves, and citrus estates frame the highways around town. Local dining relies heavily on open flame braai cooking and hearty South African comfort food.Sonpark Boulevard serves as the main culinary strip for independent restaurants. Here you find Portuguese-influenced flame-grilled chicken, game steaks, and wood-fired pizzas. Roadside butcheries across the valley serve fast shisa nyama grilled meat with stiff cornmeal pap.

history
Nelspruit started as a humble railway siding on the farm owned by the three Nel brothers. When the Delagoa Bay railway connected Pretoria to Delagoa Bay in Mozambique, the stop became a key trading junction.Subtropical agriculture turned the valley into a citrus powerhouse in the mid-twentieth century. In 2009, the South African government officially renamed the city Mbombela, a SiSwati word meaning 'a lot of people together in a small space'. Both names remain widely used today.
Rail depot established
