Pushkar sits around a holy lake on the edge of the Thar Desert. Life moves along 52 stone ghats and tight bazaar lanes where motorbikes compete with wandering cows. Hindu tradition names Pushkar Lake as the spot where Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower. Positioned on desert trade routes, the town evolved into a major pilgrimage center. Most current temple structures date from the 18th century onward after earlier medieval destructions during regional conflicts.
