Quy Nhon

Cham towers, seafood stalls, and a calm South China Sea port.

introduction

Overview

Quy Nhon spreads along a gentle crescent bay in Binh Dinh province, half-way between Hoi An and Nha Trang. The city operates on a local rhythm: morning seafood markets, midday quiet, and evening beer on the promenade. You come here for 11th-century Cham brick towers, rugged granite coves, and quiet roads. Getting around requires a scooter or app-based drivers, as public transit inside the city is minimal.

Airport transfer hack

Phu Cat Airport sits 30 km north. Shared airport shuttle buses drop passengers at 1 Nguyen Tat Thanh for 50,000 VND, saving 70% over meter taxis.

Rail station distinction

Mainline express trains stop at Dieu Tri station 10 km inland. Central Quy Nhon station only receives one daily branch train from Saigon.

food

Jumping shrimp pancakes and rice noodles by the sea

Quy Nhon cooks with high heat, fresh seafood, and raw herbs. The city's signature breakfast is bánh xèo tôm nhảy, a small crispy rice pancake topped with fresh, translucent live shrimp fried directly into the batter. Diners wrap pieces in rice paper along with green mango slices, cucumber, and mustard leaves before dipping into sweet garlic fish sauce.By late afternoon, long rows of open-air stalls along Ngô Mây and Xuan Dieu streets light their charcoal grills. Snails, blood cockles, and sea urchins are sold by weight and cooked to order with scallion oil or salted chili. Prices are listed per 100 grams or per portion, making ordering straightforward even without Vietnamese.

history

A short history

Quy Nhon served as a strategic port for the Champa kingdom between the 11th and 15th centuries under the name Thi Nai. The surrounding Binh Dinh region was the Cham political core, leaving behind brick towers and citadel walls that stand inland today. In the late 18th century, the three Tay Son brothers launched their national uprising from this province, defeating both southern lords and northern invaders. In the 20th century, the port became a major US military supply base during the Vietnam War before transitioning into a regional fishing and manufacturing hub.
