A short history
Richards Bay began as a small fishing hamlet inside a vast lagoon estuary. In 1965, the South African government decided to build a deep-water harbour to relieve pressure on Durban's port. Engineers dredged the bay and split the estuary into an industrial port and a nature sanctuary.The town grew rapidly around aluminium smelters and heavy mineral sand processing. Today, it stands as one of the southern hemisphere's largest bulk export hubs while maintaining surrounding wetland zones.
