A short history
Varkala grew as a temple sanctuary long before coastal tourism arrived. Janardanaswamy Temple established the area as a sacred site for ancestral rites. In the early 20th century, social reformer Sree Narayana Guru settled at Sivagiri, turning the town into an intellectual center against caste inequality. Backpacker tourism spread north from Kovalam in the 1990s, establishing guesthouses along the cliff tops.
