The stay was in a historic setting with a strong patina, and I love the beautiful tatami. The futon and pillow had been used too often and definitely need replacing.

The stay at the Kongo Sanmaiin temple was a great experience. The dinner and breakfast were fantastic, and participating in the morning chanting was something special. I’m glad we guests got that insight. It isn’t a classic hotel; it’s a simple lodging and you sit on the floor for meals, which isn’t a problem for me but could be hard for older people. If I booked again, I would skip the extra fee for a private toilet. The room we received didn’t match the pictures on the site, which showed two chairs/table and a direct garden view; our room lacked that and, despite a dehumidifier, it was quite damp.

The location was quiet. We were told we couldn’t drop off our backpacks before 2 pm, and the bedding was worn.

The breakfast and dinner served in a monk‑style setting were great. There was a lack of staff to greet guests, no keys to lock the room, and we had to carry luggage up to the upper floor by stairs. They also didn’t allow us to watch the ceremony in full.

The service—welcome, location, room, temple, meals, and onsen—was excellent. The futon and pillow were the only negatives.
