Located in downtown Halifax, 2 blocks from the waterfront, The Halliburton occupies 3 historic townhouses. This boutique hotel features a library, garden courtyard, and gourmet restaurant, Stories, serving fresh seafood and offering an extensive wine selection. Each room is individually decorated with antique and wood furniture, including flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, and coffee makers.

The quirky, converted old building is near the waterfront and great food spots, and the area is very quiet. The bed is excellent, and although the room is “petite,” it offers plenty of space and storage, with a fridge for food and drinks and hot drinks available in the lounge, making it ideal for walkers. The chair in the room was old and creaky, the shower only had an overhead spray that took a while to heat, and because the building is old, my attic room had a small window and required climbing two flights of stairs; the metal keys were old-fashioned and the lock needed a bit of effort to secure from the outside. The underfloor heating was noisy, so I disconnected it, which wasn’t a problem for me, and breakfast was only available on request.

The hotel sits just a little outside the main downtown core, yet it’s fully walkable to that area and the waterfront. We were greeted warmly upon arrival and the staff were helpful. Breakfast is set up differently: you can pick a few items from a list and have them delivered to your room or on the main floor; most items are not cooked but are fresh. It wasn’t expensive, but it’s something you get used to. Several restaurants are close by and many more are within a fifteen‑minute walk. I didn’t realize the room would be on floor 3 of a building without lifts; the staff helped carry our bags up, but we still had to walk up and down each time we left. The room was small with a double bed, which is fine if that’s what you’re used to, but storage was limited. The bathroom looked tired and storage was again scarce.
