Nature. The feed will animals
The location, cleanliness, food, and wild surroundings were great, but I was a bit disappointed by the activities, even though I didn’t try everything.
La Pousada Rio Claro is well situated and a true haven for birds, which you can watch without leaving the lodge, and you can also spot monkeys. The buffet is varied and very good, though drinks aren’t included. The rooms are spacious, clean, and well equipped. Activities—day or night outings, horseback rides—aren’t included in the listed price on Booking, but they are still available. The staff is discreet and very kind. The price for rooms with board is a bit high.
“Alojamiento Correcto de camino a ver Jaguares.”
The lodge does the job for the main goal of spotting wildlife and trying to reach Porto Jofre to see jaguars. The facilities are basic, and the dining hall serves a menu that becomes a bit repetitive because the dishes hardly change, which is understandable given that the nearest town is a two‑hour drive away and supplies don’t arrive as often as they should. The kitchen crew are wonderful and very friendly, always trying to make things easy for us. The atmosphere was somewhat “dim” during our visit since the river was dry and the beautiful dock couldn’t be used—in August there’s almost no water. From the property you can join tours that take you to a stretch of the river where plenty of local fauna can be seen, and the pool offers a nice spot to unwind after a day of excursions. We loved the hotel’s monkeys. The only downside is the 2.5‑hour distance to Porto Jofre, where the jaguars are seen; the boat trip itself lasts 5‑6 hours and then you have another 2.5 hours back to the lodge, which makes for a grueling day. It’s better to stay as close as possible to Porto Jofre, since that’s the main reason for coming, while the other animals appear almost everywhere. If you can, avoid driving yourself and opt for a private transfer so you can rest, and you don’t really need a guide—the boat captain can point out the key sights in Porto Jofre, just make sure the boat has a radio to receive jaguar sighting alerts, as spontaneous encounters are rare. At reception only Portuguese is spoken; you can manage, but having someone who knows a bit of English would be helpful.
The place is beautiful, close to a river with plenty of birds, capybaras, and alligators, and it could become a nice hotel if the rooms were better. The room itself is disappointing—simple to the point of neglect, especially for the price. If the price matched the simplicity, it would be fine. There’s a deck over the river right next to the hotel, but on the side, a sewer outlet discharges directly into the river and there’s a nearby chicken coop; the smell at the end of the day is very unpleasant.
