The Château de Chemery feels like stepping back to the 16th century amid restored tiles, timber framing, stonework, and beams that sometimes show wear from time. A wheel waits in front of the old fireplace, and Axel and Cecile Fontaine have passionately preserved the castle for 45 years, supported by volunteers in the restoration project. The décor is understated, blending medieval and Renaissance styles, whether bought or auctioned. Every room comes with its own bathroom and toilet, creating a private medieval‑like experience. The family‑friendly stay, comfort, welcome, breakfast, and setting all won us over. As a family that loves history, we were thrilled by the authenticity of a place that survived time and was lovingly restored by heritage enthusiasts. Nothing to complain about—family delighted and enchanted.

An authentic castle that the hosts have been restoring on their own for 45 years – a lot has been done, but much still needs to be finished. The historic rooms are adapted carefully, with period furniture in the rooms. Cécile and Axel welcomed us warmly. There is a motorcycle parking spot in the courtyard of the castle.

The castle is stunning, the park is lovely, the breakfast is excellent, and the bedding is good. We had one room on the third floor, no elevator, so we couldn’t bring all our luggage up and had to sort it out at the parking. The staff offered no help. Air conditioning sits above the bed and its blue light illuminates the whole room.

“Un retour dans le temps fascinant...”

A trip back in time… An unusual experience to sleep in a historic castle room. The hosts were very welcoming. In addition, the castle tour is included in the price of the package. The breakfast is very good. Forty years of work and investment have restored this castle, which, by the way, was bought from Alain Souchon’s family. You’ll even see one of his pianos in one of the rooms.

“Séjour dépaysant très agréable,calme du lieu.”

The welcome and the castle tour were great. I had good conversations with the host, and breakfast was tailored to my preferences. There was a little lighting for the staircase leading to my room, and the first step of the staircase needed a small repair.
