The person I spoke to on the phone about arrival was friendly, and so was the lady who showed me the rooms. Before entering the room, I was faced with a jumble of cheap old kitchen tables and chairs, a sewing corner for some reason, an ironing station, a washing machine, and a makeshift kitchen—literally on the ground, not inside a room or hall, with a tarp covering the roof. I had to climb five steps that looked like airplane entry steps, only to find an old yellow‑shifted paint door with a bad handle. The room itself had an unpleasant mold smell, cracked walls in some places, and the AC was unplugged and too high to reach without a step ladder. Two nightstands were dirty, and a small footstool held two dirty glasses. The bathroom was small but appeared clean except for the faucet, which was covered in limescale as if no one had ever cleaned it, even though a proper detergent could clear it in about three minutes. The shower head was cracked, so showering would also spray the entire bathroom. The single light in the bedroom didn’t work; I could only make it function by touching it, changing its direction, and fiddling with the cables, which essentially meant it was non‑functional. The bed was brand new and the sheets were clean. There was a TV that worked, and the listing said there was Wi‑Fi, though I didn’t test it. The staff were neither unpleasant nor particularly pleasant. The grandmother who acted like Vito Corleone didn’t have a room prepared just for me, but she let her female staff member show me any available rooms. I chose the better of the two presented, which made me wonder how the other one looked. The walls were thin enough that I could hear children playing outside my room and people talking in other rooms. I’ve stayed in many good rooms in Spain, Italy, Sweden, etc.
