“Hugely disappointing. Avoid the lodge.”
The staff I met were friendly and efficient. My bathroom was new and functional (I knew it wasn’t en suite). The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good. I had expected a Scottish country‑style hotel, but I was actually in a gatehouse or lodge down the drive from the hotel. It had been divided into what I think were three bedrooms, my own bathroom, a communal kitchen and dining area (I only needed the bedroom and separate bathroom). The lodge had no lightshades, not even in the hall, and in my large bedroom—called Macallan—there were two bare lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling. The walls were bare, with no artwork, and a large mirror was propped against a wall. The furniture was a mix of old and new, including an old sideboard with ugly scorch marks. The “signage” in the lodge was mainly cheap A4 printed sheets stuck with Sellotape. The main hotel is four stars; this rating does not apply to the lodge.
