The hostel’s vibe, the activities that bring strangers together, and the friendly staff make it a great spot to meet people from around the world. My stay was wonderful.

Books Hostel in Rio’s historic Santa Teresa neighborhood offers dormitory and twin rooms with shared bathrooms, free Wi‑Fi, and a 24‑hour front desk. Guests enjoy breakfast, a communal barbecue, a shared kitchen, and a lively bar serving caipirinhas and cold beers. An on‑site library, TV/computer room, and proximity to Lapa, the bus station, and subway make it ideal for explorers.

Staying at Books again was even better than the first time. The place feels like a family, and the parties and gatherings they plan make it impossible to leave without making friends or having a blast. The staff and volunteers are top‑notch—friendly and genuinely caring. The only thing that keeps me coming back is the lack of curtains on the beds and the annoying electrical hum from the outlets in room 2.

If you’re not into partying, this spot isn’t for you, but for those who love a good time, it’s spot‑on. The community vibe is solid, breakfasts are decent, beer pong is a hit, and the games and socializing with other guests are great. The staff are super friendly, responsive, and trust the guests. Happy hour is fantastic. The only downside is the limited beer selection and the fact that rooms aren’t locked for privacy; it would be nice if the hostel offered laundry services too.

I chose this hostel because of its high rating, but the experience was a letdown. My room (No. 3) was dirty, had a sour smell, and was littered with clothes and shoes. The bed was unfinished, with other guests’ linens on top, and when I asked about it, the staff seemed confused. The linens were okay, but the towel was worn out. The bathrooms were cramped, with no place to hang clothes, and the toilet seat was worn. Someone even left a towel on the sink at night.

This place is all about parties—late‑night music sets the mood and there are daily activities that make it easy to meet people. As a solo traveler, I never felt alone because there was always someone around. The cleaning crew is lovely and keeps the hostel fresh, and the beds are super comfy. Breakfast is simple but filling enough to last until lunch. It’s in a central spot with good public transport, though you should watch your surroundings.
