The owner was unbelievably friendly and took care of us. I’m keeping details about my own honor private, but I did bring a problem during my stay and he handled it warmly together with us. Through the owner, I also received help from people in the San Dan Gorge area and felt the warmth of the people strongly. It was a spontaneous, unplanned trip, but next time I’ll make San Dan Gorge and this guesthouse my destination and stay again.

The setting is great, in a picturesque village right next to the gorges. Big Bear is very welcoming and caring. He saved our evening by taking us to a fantastic restaurant, Manpuku, where we ate well and laughed a lot! You really have to plan meals in advance because there are very few shops.

The host was friendly and approachable. There was no meal service, and we were told to bring our own food, but we received delicious local breakfast such as brown rice and seasonal bamboo shoots stew. Since there was no plan, he showed us recommended spots and we enjoyed the great outdoors and had a good time. I booked on short notice and it was worth staying.

This was definitely my best stay so far. Big Bear is an amazing host who went above and beyond! I was staying at the lodge alone and we really hit it off, sharing his delicious dinner and breakfast and going to Hijiri lake together. Big Bear speaks pretty good English, is friendly and knowledgeable on many topics. I liked the Easter eggs about Japanese culture in his lodge—from Shinto shrine to Onsen etiquette, a functioning vintage amp, and overall beautifully thought‑out interior design. I slept well listening to the soothing sound of the stream outside. He even called the construction workers inside Sandankyo to ask if the path was accessible for hikers, so I could hike until Sandandaki even though there were some path blocks (I could have gone until Hijiri lake as it doesn’t take the time it says online—if you’re used to hiking, you’ll be faster! But I decided for a swim in the beautiful water as there was nobody around). The lodge’s location is great—short walk from the bus station, Sandankyo entrance, and the village’s shrine (please check it out!). Big Bear, Shin, thank you for everything :) I missed you as soon as I hopped on the bus to Hiroshima. You’ll be in my heart forever.

Big Bear is a super host who treats you personally and makes sure everything is arranged as best as possible. He drove us to the restaurant in the next village and gave us a bottle of sake. Manpuku Shokudo is also recommended, very tasty food that keeps coming, for little money. The beds at Big Bear are very comfortable and the bathroom and toilets are very clean. The house is only 5 minutes drive from the start of the beautiful canyon walk, 2 hours return. We slept fantastically. We wholeheartedly recommend Alaskan Dream!
