“Overpriced flophouse”
The spot by the lagoon is decent, but other lakefront hotels are just as good. We never hit any of the power outages that other reviews mention. This is the only one‑star review I’ve ever written for a hotel. The photos and the high price are totally misleading – it’s a budget place. We were given a different room than the one we booked. Everything was old, dirty, or broken: hair in the shower, curtains that kept falling off the wall, stained and worn‑out sheets and towels, a broken safe, and a set of dusty veils hanging right above the bed. The life jackets were moldy. The worst part was the restaurant: the woman working there was rude, and the pricey meal we ordered looked like it was cooked on a budget airline – a half‑fish filet, five frozen supermarket fries, and a packaged salad. I never realized how offensive a meal could be. There are very few food options nearby. When we asked to be moved back to our booked room and raised these issues, the receptionist said the bed in that room was bigger, so we shouldn’t complain. She called our complaints “details.” Their indifference is also shown by the many COVID‑19 signs still hanging around the property, which they’ve had years to remove. Bacalar is beautiful, so don’t waste your time here on this overpriced flophouse.
