The canal was so peaceful; we even took a cruise down to St. Gilles, spotting plenty of birds and bulls and enjoying a lovely evening. Bridgette and her partner were genuinely kind, and I loved just lounging on the deck and letting time slip by. We also visited a nearby Mas en Provence distillery that makes essential oils, which was fantastic. Even though the boat had everything we could wish for—air conditioning, a bathtub, the works—it was a reminder to think about how our actions affect the environment. I didn’t read Bridgette’s directions to the port carefully, and Google Maps led us onto a narrow dead‑end dirt road, but Bridgette’s partner kindly came to rescue us.

What made the stay unique was the originality of the experience, though living on a barge required a lot of flexibility.

The welcome was warm and the setting had a picturesque, quirky vibe. Getting there was easy and parking was convenient. The bedding wasn’t as comfortable as in a house, but that’s expected on a small barge, so I wasn’t surprised.
