The bath and meals were wonderful. The building, a 150‑year‑old manor in Yata, Toyama Prefecture, was reportedly moved into the mountains over 30 years ago, which is astonishing. With only five rooms in the impressive building, the three of us and two other solo travelers enjoyed a luxurious sense of exclusivity. It doesn’t seem like a profitable venture, but it feels like the owner runs it as a hobby. The toilets are cold, so we wish they’d install heated, motion‑sensor‑activated heaters.

A magnificent ryokan tucked into the mountains. The onsens are superb, the food incredible, and the staff adorable. We loved our stay in this charming place and highly recommend it!

First, the baths. Relaxing in a hot bath beneath the open sky, surrounded by breathtaking nature and complete seclusion, was truly unique. We were the only guests in the entire hotel, so we had both outdoor baths entirely to ourselves. Breakfast and dinner were exceptional, each offering a range of Japanese dishes that would be hard to find on your own. Everything was prepared and presented to the highest standard, and the kaiseki‑style service added extra flair. Finally, staying in such a grand traditional Japanese room was unforgettable; it felt like living in one of the palaces we’d visited across Japan. Minor inconveniences included occasional fuel exhaust smells near the baths and no place to hang towels in the room.
