The place turned out to be a phantom—no official name, impossible to locate, and it was under renovation when we finally found it. After dialing the listed number, we were redirected to a sister hotel and then had to trek to our room at the original site, most of which was still being worked on. We had to step outside in the rain to grab breakfast, and there were no staff present at the hotel. The breakfast was overpriced; my husband got a sausage sandwich that only contained 1.5 sausages. We paid £150 for the stay, which felt entirely unjustified. In the evening we bought two drinks and two packets of crisps, spending just under £20.

Good service and excellent smoked salmon and scrambled egg for breakfast. No one available at reception at Tollgate to greet us on arrival ! We were not told that we would have to go to the Castle Hotel for our food when we booked

The location is fantastic, set in a charming little village with lovely walks. The sister hotel, the Castle, is fantastic, and we went there for breakfast. The staff were very friendly. We attended a wedding reception at the Castle and it was wonderful, and we also enjoyed a nice lunch there. Unfortunately, there was no reception at the main property because it was being renovated, so we had to go up the road to the Castle. The hotel didn’t give us enough notice; the only sign on the door was a single “1 on 1” and nothing indicated reception, which is where we first looked. The bedroom was dated but otherwise adequate.
