The breakfast was among the best I’ve tasted in Kyoto, beautifully cooked and presented, and the spot was perfect—just a short walk from Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and the Imperial Palace, with plenty of eateries and shops nearby. I only wish the weather had been worse so I’d have stayed in my room, which felt like a sanctuary in the city!

Everything! My room, originally the tea ceremony hall, opened onto a beautifully tended Japanese garden. The staff were always kind and attentive, leaving lovely origami and sweet notes on the tatami each night. Dinner was outstanding, and the public bath was refreshing and relaxing. Everything was absolutely fantastic. I always felt pampered and warmly welcomed in the uniquely graceful way only the Japanese can provide.
