“Off the beaten path”
I was looking for off‑the‑beaten‑path spots and wasn’t disappointed. The bungalows are rustic yet well equipped with AC and a full‑size bed, and the view was gorgeous; there weren’t many people around, so it was quiet, which I liked, and I’d love to return during high season to experience it fully. The staff didn’t speak English, but that was fine; only one of them could help us via WhatsApp. We arrived after losing most of our cash on the way (long story…) and found no ATMs nearby, yet the staff were patient and accepted payment in two different currencies, for which I’m very grateful. Unfortunately, we were assigned the first floating bungalow down the stairs, whose roof scraped against the neighboring bungalow, producing a lot of annoying noise whenever boats passed or people went down the stairs.
There wasn’t much to like. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t match the booking description. They set their own rate, so we ended up paying about 100,000 Lao Kip more than the correct amount based on the international exchange rate. There was no Wi‑Fi at all, even though it was listed, and although we booked a room with an attached shower, we were given one without it, even though we were the only guests at the time. Communication with the host was difficult. We arrived around 6:30 pm to find the bar and restaurant already closed. That would have been fine, but when we asked for nearby eating recommendations, we barely got a response. The listing said loud music and parties were not allowed because it’s supposed to be a quiet place in peaceful surroundings, yet the next morning from about 7 am there was very loud music and karaoke from nearby boats, making it impossible to sleep. Additionally, the floating houses are placed quite close to each other, and the metal roofs knock together when the water is wavy, creating loud noises throughout the night. Nothing was as described on the booking. We also didn’t receive a key to our room. Later that evening, when we went out to look for food, the host sent us a WhatsApp message saying they had locked our room and that we could find the key in a certain place, which felt quite unprofessional especially for the money we paid. Overall, the place has potential, but our stay was unfortunately not as comfortable or peaceful as we had expected.
