“A 300 year old walawwa(mansion) that still feells like a home”
We expected a charming old house and left feeling as if we’d stayed inside a slice of Sri Lankan history. The walawwa, over 300 years old, keeps every detail—from the 1911 façade to the jak and ebony woodwork and open courtyards—intact, not turned into a museum but still warm and lived‑in. Ishantha, the sixth‑generation owner, has poured himself into preserving that feel. The setting is half the experience: twenty‑five acres of tea, cinnamon, greenery, early‑morning birdsong, and the Adam’s Peak range in the backdrop. Walking the estate was a highlight. Ishantha and his team looked after us genuinely, never feeling scripted, sharing the house and village history when asked and being quick and cheerful with any need. The food was traditional Sri Lankan done properly. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and full of character. If you want a hotel, this isn’t it; if you want a place with a story, quiet, and honest hospitality, it’s hard to beat. Thank you Ishantha and the team. Nothing affected our stay; it’s a little away from the main road, so a vehicle helps, and mobile signal can be patchy in places—though most people, including myself, will count that as part of the appeal.
“Could be way better”
The location and vibes of the house are great, but it wasn’t very clean and there was some confusion about the bathrooms, which also weren’t clean.
“Gileemale - a Gem of a Place!”
It was a pleasure learning the history and traditions of this remote mansion built 300 years ago for the King’s soldiers. The host, a seventh‑generation owner, is so knowledgeable and inspiring. The food from local produce was super delicious! I loved the Ganesha in his garden. Gems were found and I’m proud to now wear one. We didn’t like having to leave.
The experience is incredible, a timeless moment staying at Gileemale; I’ll definitely return with my family.
“Уникальное место”
A very atmospheric place that you should stay at least 2‑3 nights to escape the bustle; a true authentic Sri Lanka, the grounds are delightful. They fed us well with local cuisine. Everything was good, but the road to get there…
